10 Most Disastrous Football Tragedies in History. 






10. Heysel Stadium disaster (Brussels – 1985) Causalities: 39 died Date: 29 May 1985 Location: Heysel Stadium, Brussels, Belgium Death Toll: 39 Cause: Crowd trouble. In European Cup final game between Liverpool v/s Juventus riots erupted allegedly when Liverpool fans rushed to the wall to climb and reach the other way where Juventus fans were. Juventus fans ran back on the terraces and away from the threat into a concrete retaining wall. Fans already seated near the wall were crushed; eventually the wall collapsed. 

9. Bradford City Fire Disaster Date: 11 May 1985 Location: Valley Parade Stadium, Bradford, England. Death Toll: 56 Cause: Fire In the match between Bradford and Lincoln City, a small fire was reported by TV the commentator. But in less than four minutes, in windy conditions, it had engulfed the whole stand, trapping some people in their seats. Because of the wooden structure of the stadium, it got into flames which led to big disaster. In the panic that ensued, fleeing crowds had to break down locked exits to escape.

 8. The Second Ibrox disaster Date: 2 January 1971 Location: Ibrox Stadium, Glasgow, Scotland. Death Toll: 66 Cause: Stampede At a game between Rangers v/s Celtic, the Celtic took a 1–0 lead, when the game was tied 0-0 after 89 minutes and many Rangers supporters left the stadium. As the crowds were leaving the ground, barriers on Stairway gave way causing a massive chain-reaction pile-up of spectators. Most of the deaths were caused by compressive asphyxia, with bodies being stacked as deep as six feet in the area.

The Luzhniki disaster Date: 20 Oct 1982 Location: Lenin Stadium, Moscow, Russia Death Toll: 66+ Cause: Stampede the Luzhniki disaster took place at the Grand Sports Arena of the Central Lenin Stadium in Moscow, Soviet Union during the UEFA Cup second round match between FC Spartak Moscow and HFC Haarlem. The match was about to finish when people started rushing for exit. A few falls which result in many people came under the pile of people coming from above and 66 people had to lose their lives.

Puerta 12 Tragedy Date: 23 June 1968 Location: Estadio Monumental, Buenos Aires, Argentina Death Toll: 71+ Cause: Crowd trouble the disaster occurred after a match between River Plate vs the Boca Juniors. Some claim that the disaster happened after Boca Juniors fans threw burning River flags from the upper tiers of the stadium, causing a stampede of their own fans in the lower tier. Others claim that it happened after River fans arrived at the Boca section, causing the stampede of the visiting fans.

 5. Port Said Stadium Disaster Date: 1 February 2012 Location: Port Said Stadium, Egypt Death Toll: 79 Cause: Riots A massive riot occurred following an Egyptian premier league football match between Al-Masry and Al Ahly clubs. Thousands of Al-Masry spectators stormed the stadium stands and the pitch, following a 3–1 victory by Al-Masry. Al-Masry fans violently attacked Al-Ahly fans using knives, swords, clubs, stones, bottles, and fireworks as weapons.

 4. The Guatemala Disaster Date: 16 October 1996 Location: Mateo Flores National Stadium, Guatemala City, Guatemala Death Toll: 80+ Cause: stampede this incident occurred minutes before a 1998 FIFA World Cup qualification match between Guatemala and Costa Rica was to take place as an excessive number of fans attempted to enter the General Sur section. It created a human avalanche into the bottom of the stands, which was separated from the field by a fence. The improper design of the building in the event of an emergency caused the fans to stampede and fall onto each other, causing many people to suffocate. 

3. The Hillsborough Disaster Date: 15 April 1989 Location: Hillsborough Stadium, Sheffield, England Death Toll: 96 Cause: human crush During the FA Cup semi-final match between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest football clubs, a human crush resulted in the deaths of 96 people and injuries to 766 others. The incident has since been blamed primarily on the police for letting too many people enter the stadium. It remains the worst stadium-related disaster in British history, and one of the world's worst football disasters.

Accra Sports Stadium Disaster (Accra – 2001) Date: 9 May, 2001 Location: Accra Sports Stadium, Accra, Ghana Death Toll: 127 Cause: Crowd trouble it occurred during a match between Accra Hearts of Oak Sporting Club and Asante Kotoko. The home side scored two late goals to defeat Kotoko 2–1 which led to disappointed Kotoko fans throwing plastic seats and bottles onto the pitch. The response to this crowd disturbance from the police was to fire tear gas into the crowd massive of 70,000. Panic ensued and a resulting stampede led to the deaths from compressive asphyxia.

The National Stadium Disaster Date: 24 May 1964 Location: National Stadium, Lima, Peru Death Toll: 318 Cause: Crowd trouble The Lima disaster is the worst soccer disaster in the history of the sport. It was an Olympic qualifying match, between Peru and Argentina, held at the National Stadium in Lima. A would-be equalizing goal by Peru was disallowed by referee, sparking protests from the fans. Police fired tear gas canisters into the stand to prevent fans from invading the field of play. This caused panic and an attempt at a mass exodus to avoid the gas, which turned into stamped. Most of the death were due to hemorrhaging or asphyxia.
